10x10 Living
Wood Joint Design
The challenge of this project is to alter existing joint technology into new, functional structural elements that the entire 10’x10’ structure is comprised of. Thus, the “living structure” is made solely of the re-authored wedge-lock-slab joint (the long, stepped planks) and the re-authored crossbill joint (the thinner interlocking screen). Inspired by a Jenga puzzle, the three compressed levels of wood stack upon one another and result in a rotating motion to direct the experience of this space as it simultaneously grows from private to public use as one rises. The turning of the new WLS joint offers a durable base for easy shelving, and the illusion of the new crossbill joint creates a privacy gradient while also providing members with secondary support. The quaint space is suitable for an abundance of multi-purpose activities from playful socializing, to cooking, to sleeping.
